About the project
This two year project will focus on life in Cheadle during WW2 and research the unique archive of Cheadle and Tean Times and other local newspapers for information. It will tell the story and impact of the war on rural life and community spirit in Cheadle; the women, industry and rural community that remained while the men were away at war.
It will bring to life the story of the Spitfire named ‘Hope of Cheadle’ bought by public donations and the Motor Torpedo Boat bought through local investment to support the war effort!
A community inspired souvenir edition of the Cheadle and Tean Times has been printed to advertise, promote and engage the public in this project.
Events and activities will be staged to tell the story of WW2 Cheadle in an entertaining and informative way including “Cheadle Spitfire Day” a street event with the highlight being a full-sized Spitfire replica in the centre of town.
